Barcode Symbyologies

  • Barcodes are symbols that can be scanned electronically using laser or camera-based systems.

  • They are used to encode information such as product numbers, serial numbers and batch numbers.
  • Barcodes play a key role in supply chains, enabling parties like retailers, manufacturers, transport providers and hospitals to automatically identify and track products as they move through the supply chain.

One Dimensional BarCodes:

  • Contain data that is read along the length of the barcode.
  • May contain numbers only, alpha-numeric data , or a limited set of alphabetical characters.
  • Typically, these are ASCII characters.

Two-Dimensional BarCodes:

  • A 2D (two-dimensional) barcode is a graphical image that stores information both horizontally -- as one-dimensional bar codes do -- and vertically.
  • 2D barcodes are also known as quick response codes because they enable fast data access.
