RAM

Random Access Memory (RAM) is a type of data storage used in computers that is generally located on the motherboard.

This type of memory is a volatile and all information that was stored in RAM is lost when the computer is turned off.

  • When computer loads the operating system (OS) from the hard drive into the system's RAM.
  • Generally, the critical parts of the operating system are maintained in RAM as long as the computer is ON.
  • When you open an application, it is loaded into RAM. To conserve RAM usage, many applications load only the essential parts of the program initially and then load other pieces as needed.
  • After an application is loaded, any files that are opened for use in that application are loaded into RAM.

Types of RAM :

Dynamic Random Access Memory (DRAM) :
  • It is considered a type of RAM, which means that information stored on it can be accessed in a random order.
  • Information in DRAM is stored using an integrated circuit which contains transistors and capacitors.
Static Random Access Memory (SRAM) :
  • On the other hand, does not need to be refreshed at all. Static RAM maintains its information as along as the chip has enough power to keep its data.
  • The reason is because SRAM chips are made of a flip-flop circuit which does not need constant refreshing.
  • SRAM can be found in the cache memory of a computer or as part of the RAM digital to analog converter on a video card.
