Codecs for Videos

  • A VIDEO FORMAT is the name of the CONTAINER of the "video".
  • A container is a structure to contain data associated with a video.
  • For example : Encoded video file, Encoded audio file, multiple soundtracks or subtitles files...

  • Coded Video and Audio files are encoded / decoded by CODECS (Codecs "compress/decompress"data) When surfing, a "Video" is provided in a container. 
  • The same type of codecs decodes Audio and Video files before the "video" can be played.

  • If the right codecs are not available for decoding, the "video" cannot be played.
  • To play a video format, a browser needs to have the right player and the appropriate codecs.
